When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?
Wondering when to plan newborn photos? You’re not the only one asking: “When should we schedule newborn photos?” The timing depends on the photos you want and how you’re feeling after your baby arrives. Here’s how I plan studio, in-home and Fresh 48 sessions.
How long after birth should you do newborn photos?
For sleepy, posed newborn photos, I usually plan for around 5–14 days old. That gives us a starting point when you book, but your baby doesn’t need to follow a perfect schedule. We’ll make time for feeding, changing and settling, and I won’t force a pose if your baby isn’t comfortable.
Book while you’re pregnant so I can keep space around your due date. Once your baby arrives, send me a message and we’ll choose the session date.
Is two weeks too late for newborn photos?
No, two weeks isn’t too late. If your baby is already here and you haven’t booked, reach out with their birth date. We’ll look at availability and talk about the photos you’re hoping for. You haven’t missed your chance just because you’re past that first week.
Can we do a newborn photoshoot at three weeks or one month old?
Yes, we can still plan photos. Your baby may spend more time awake or prefer to stretch out rather than curl up. We’ll follow their lead and make room for open eyes, little expressions and photos in your arms. If they settle into a comfortable pose, we can photograph that too.
An in-home newborn session is an option if you’d rather stay home. It can include family photos, details around the nursery and posed baby photos when your baby is comfortable. You don’t have to choose between photos of your baby and photos together.
Is seven weeks too old for newborn photos?
It’s still worth reaching out. At seven weeks, I’d plan around the baby you have now rather than promise the same sleepy poses as a week-old newborn. Tell me your baby’s age and what you love, and I’ll help you work out the right session. There’s still plenty to remember at this stage.
Fresh 48 Sessions: Within the First 48 Hours
A Fresh 48 session takes place in the hospital or birth center within the first two days after delivery.
These sessions capture:
- Wrinkly newborn details
- First sibling meetings
- Hospital bracelets and tiny toes
- Raw, emotional first moments
They are documentary-style and incredibly meaningful.
When Should You Book?
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or third trimester.
I keep space around your due date, then we finalize the day once your baby arrives. If your baby is already a few weeks old, send me their age and I’ll check what’s available.
