Fall Family Photos at Antelope Island State Park

Antelope Island State Park offers a variety of shots as the sun starts setting over the red rocks and the Great Salt Lake. It's no wonder why this state park is so popular at Sunset!

Here you can see the differences in lighting over golden hour - the hour before sunset. This family drove in from out of state and had requested to do family photos as well as a small senior session with their daughter. As they were coming later October, I suggested Antelope Island as we weren't sure the fall colors would still be around. We started off during the stronger bright light of the sun so we utilized some of the larger red rocks for the shade they provided. After about 20 minutes, the light started to soften and we started being able to move around more. As the sun continued to set, I turned the family around to have their backs facing the Wasatch front as the sky was shades of purple and pink. This provided a soft lighting on my subjects making for some gorgeous shots! Once light was getting low, I pumped up my off camera flash strength and started using the external lighting to expose my subjects while keeping the beautiful shades of orange that were now more prominent as the sun reflected on the water. Three completely different looks in one session!

All in all, you cannot go wrong with scheduling a family session during the months of October and November at Antelope Island. Cooler weather and gorgeous sunsets as well as NO BUGS, makes this state park very desirable for photographers of all kinds!
