Bonneville Salt Flats Senior Photoshoot

Savannah’s Sunset Senior Photos at the Utah Salt Flats

Savannah traveled from Texas to Utah for a destination senior photoshoot at the Bonneville Salt Flats. She brought her friend Ella along for the trip, and we included the two of them together in part of the session.

Traveling from Texas for Bonneville Salt Flats senior photos

Savannah wanted senior photos that felt completely different from the locations available near her home in Texas. She traveled to Utah for a destination senior session at the Bonneville Salt Flats, one of the most recognizable photography locations in the state.

The wide, white landscape gave us a clean and timeless background for her senior portraits. We planned the Salt Flats photoshoot around sunset so we could use the softer evening light and capture the changing colors in the sky.

Savannah’s friend Ella joined her on the trip, so we also made time for photos of the two friends together. Savannah still received a complete senior photography experience, with Ella added into a portion of the session for relaxed and meaningful friendship portraits.

An uncertain forecast turned into a beautiful Salt Flats sunset

The weather looked uncertain before Savannah’s session. Dark clouds moved through the area, and for a while it seemed like the sunset we had planned for might not happen.

Once we arrived at the Bonneville Salt Flats and began taking photos, the weather started to clear. The clouds created soft, flattering light at the beginning of the session, followed by warmer sunset tones later in the evening.

Weather at the Salt Flats can change quickly. Unless conditions are unsafe, a cloudy forecast does not always mean the photoshoot needs to be canceled. Savannah’s session was a perfect example of how quickly the sky can transform.

Trendy blurry and grainy photos mixed with sharp senior portraits

Savannah wanted her gallery to include some of the blurry, movement-filled and slightly grainy images that are currently popular in senior photography. These photos feel candid, energetic and a little more editorial than a traditional posed portrait.

We intentionally used movement and slower shutter speeds for some of the images, creating motion blur that looked artistic rather than accidental. The grainier finish gave those photographs a nostalgic, film-inspired feeling.

We also photographed plenty of clear, properly focused senior portraits. This gave Savannah a balanced gallery with current, creative images alongside polished photos that will still feel timeless years from now.

Adding best-friend photos to a senior session

Ella came along to support Savannah, enjoy the experience and be part of a few photos. Including a close friend can help a senior relax while also creating meaningful photos from an important season of life.
