In-home newborn session in Layton Utah with soft natural window light

What to Expect

In-home sessions are calm, flexible, and storytelling-focused. I’ll guide you with natural prompts and simple posing while following baby’s cues.

  • Typical length: 1.5–2.5 hours with breaks for feeding, changing, and cuddling.
  • We’ll use soft window light in spots like the living room, nursery, and primary bedroom.
  • No need to deep clean—just tidy one or two zones we’ll use for photos.

Getting the Home Ready

  • Light: Open blinds/curtains; turn off overhead lights/lamps to avoid mixed color casts.
  • Heat: Keep rooms comfortably warm (72–75°F) so baby stays cozy in swaddles/onesies.
  • Zones: Quick tidy of the bed (neutral bedding if possible), a sofa corner, and/or nursery chair.
  • Clutter: Hide remotes/chargers/water bottles; keep nightstands simple.
  • Pets: They’re welcome! We’ll incorporate them safely and briefly if you’d like.

How to Prepare Baby

  • Keep baby awake for ~45–60 minutes before I arrive (a warm bath is perfect).
  • Feed on arrival or just before I get there so baby is full and sleepy.
  • Dress loosely in a zip-up sleeper with no tight socks/waistbands to avoid marks.
  • Have extra diapers, wipes, and burp cloths handy—we’ll take breaks as needed.

What Parents Should Wear

  • Soft, neutral tones (cream, oatmeal, tan, soft gray, muted earth tones) photograph beautifully.
  • Avoid bold logos and high-contrast patterns; texture (knits, linen) looks great.
  • Keep nails simple/neutral—hands are often in close-ups.
  • Have a second outfit nearby in case of baby surprises.

Preparing Siblings

  • We’ll bring siblings in early for their portion, keep it fun and quick, then let them take a break.
  • Plan a quiet activity in another room/backyard with a helper (grandparent, partner, friend).
  • Snacks and water ready; avoid messy treats until we’re done.
  • Safety first: I’ll always support baby; sibling interactions are guided and gentle.

What to Gather

  • Swaddles/blankets you love (neutrals photograph best).
  • Plain onesies (white/cream) + any special outfit you’d like to include.
  • Heirlooms or meaningful items (blanket, quilt, stuffed animal, letter board).
  • Sound machine (optional) and a pacifier—even if baby doesn’t usually take one.

Day-Of Checklist

  • Open blinds/curtains in the rooms we’ll use; turn off overhead lights.
  • Warm the home slightly (72–75°F) for baby’s comfort.
  • Make the bed with simple, neutral bedding if possible.
  • Quick tidy of one sofa corner and the nursery chair.
  • Have diapers, wipes, swaddles, pacifier, and extra milk within reach.

If baby is fussy or wide-awake, that’s okay—lifestyle sessions embrace real moments. We’ll take breaks and follow baby’s lead.
