Maternity Photography Tips

Phones can take some pretty incredible pictures now, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking your own pregnancy photos. I have DIY maternity photos from my own pregnancies that I still value. But taking a quick photo of your bump and creating a polished maternity portrait are two very different things.

Professional maternity photography is less about owning an expensive camera and more about understanding light, posing, perspective, styling and how all of those pieces work together to make you look and feel your best.

A Little Perspective

These are actually my own DIY maternity photos

Before I talk about why professional maternity photography is different, I think it's only fair to show that I have DIY pregnancy photos of my own. These images still matter to me because they document that season of my life. A photograph does not have to be professionally taken to have value.

But there is a noticeable difference between simply documenting a pregnancy and intentionally creating a maternity portrait. Lighting, camera angle, posing, wardrobe, composition and editing all affect the finished image.

1. Professional lighting changes the entire photograph

Great maternity photography isn't simply about making an image brighter. Light determines where your eye goes, how shape is defined, how skin looks and how your baby bump is highlighted.

In the studio, I can intentionally shape the light to create anything from a soft, natural portrait to something darker and more editorial. Outdoors, the same principle applies: choosing the right direction, time of day and position matters just as much as the location itself.

The camera isn't the most important part.

A professional camera helps, but the bigger difference is knowing what to do with the light that is already there—or how to create the light the photograph needs.

2. You don't have to know how to pose

This is probably the concern I hear most often: "I don't know what to do in front of the camera."

You don't need to.

Maternity posing is very intentional. Small adjustments to your hands, shoulders, chin, hips, feet and the direction of your body can completely change the way a photograph feels. My job is to notice those details for you.

I don't just call out instructions from behind the camera, either. When a pose is easier to understand by seeing it, I'll physically demonstrate it myself so you can mirror what I'm doing.

Behind the Scenes

This is what I mean when I say I'll show you how to pose

Sometimes explaining where to put every arm, hand and foot is much harder than simply showing you. Here is a behind-the-scenes example of me demonstrating the pose first so my client can see exactly what I mean.

3. You get to be in the photograph instead of managing it

DIY photos often mean checking the phone, setting a timer, adjusting the tripod, running into position, checking the image again and repeating the process until something works.

During a professional session, you don't have to think about any of that. I'm watching your posture, your expression, the light, your clothing, the background and the little details you probably won't notice until you see a finished photograph.

Your only job is to follow my direction and enjoy the experience.

4. Professional editing is more than adding a filter

Editing is an important part of the finished photograph, but my goal is not to make you look like a different person.

Professional editing allows me to create consistency across the gallery, balance color and skin tones, refine light and contrast, remove temporary distractions and make sure the finished images reflect the way I intended them to look when I photographed them.

This is also one reason I don't judge a session based on the back of the camera alone. The photograph is captured intentionally with the finished image already in mind.

5. You're creating more than a quick phone picture

Pregnancy is one of those seasons that can feel long while you're in it and unbelievably short once it's over. Your body changes again, the nursery fills with baby gear, and before long the bump that felt impossible to miss exists mostly in photographs.

That's why I think professional maternity photography has value beyond simply getting a pretty picture for social media. These images can become part of an album, framed artwork, your baby's story or simply a record of a version of yourself you won't ever be again in exactly the same way.

Maternity portraits can be simple, dramatic, editorial—or a mixture of all three.

So, should you stop taking DIY maternity photos?

Absolutely not.

Take the mirror selfies. Take the weekly bump pictures. Hand your partner your phone. Take pictures in the nursery and photographs of the ordinary days you want to remember.

I still value my own DIY pregnancy photos.

I just don't think DIY photographs and a professional maternity session have to compete with each other. They serve different purposes. One documents the everyday moments as they happen. The other gives you an opportunity to slow down, feel beautiful and intentionally create something from this season.
