Lifestyle Newborn Photography
Bringing a newborn home changes everything, and for many families the last thing they want to do is pack a diaper bag, load everyone into the car and head to a photography studio. In-home newborn photography lets you stay exactly where you are most comfortable while I come to you and document these first weeks in a relaxed, natural way.
Why families choose in-home newborn photography
Studio newborn photography and in-home newborn photography create two different experiences. A studio session is ideal for families wanting polished, posed newborn portraits with curated setups. An in-home session is designed around your family, your home and the connections happening naturally during these first weeks.
As a Utah newborn photographer based in Ogden, I travel to families throughout Northern Utah and the Wasatch Front for lifestyle newborn sessions. There is no need to make your home look like a magazine or worry about your baby following a perfect schedule. I look for good light, meaningful spaces and genuine interaction, then guide you through the rest.
You don't have to leave home
No packing the entire nursery into a diaper bag or worrying about getting everyone out the door on time. I bring the photography equipment to you and work around baby's feeding and soothing needs.
Your photos feel personal
The nursery, your favorite chair, the couch where you spend late-night feedings and the rooms where your family actually lives become part of your newborn's story.
Siblings can be themselves
Older children can take breaks, play with their toys or have a snack. They do not have to sit quietly through an entire studio session waiting for their turn.
Pets can be included
When it can be done safely, dogs and other family pets can be included for part of the session. For many families, they are an important part of welcoming the new baby home.
What happens during an in-home newborn session?
In-home sessions are baby-led and relaxed. I am not expecting your newborn to sleep for the entire session, and there is no problem if baby needs to eat, be changed, be rocked or simply spend some time awake.
We usually begin by looking through the home for the best available light. Most sessions take place in one or two areas such as the nursery, primary bedroom or living room. From there, I guide your family into natural positions while still leaving room for genuine interaction.
You will get a combination of softly directed family portraits, individual images of baby, parent-and-baby photographs, sibling interactions and the little details that make your newborn unique.
Your baby does not have to sleep through the session.
Some newborns sleep deeply while others stay alert and curious. Awake expressions, stretches, cuddles and quiet moments with parents can be just as meaningful as sleepy photographs. We work with the baby you have that day rather than trying to force a particular outcome.
How should you prepare your home?
One of the biggest misconceptions about in-home newborn photography is that your entire house needs to be spotless. It doesn't. I usually need only one or two areas with good light, and small distractions can easily be moved before we begin.
- Open blinds and curtains before I arrive
- Turn off overhead lights and lamps to avoid mixed lighting
- Keep the home comfortably warm for baby
- Tidy the nursery, bedroom or living area you would most like photographed
- Clear small items such as chargers, water bottles and remotes
- Use simple or neutral bedding if you have it, but don't buy anything special
If you aren't sure which room will work best, don't worry. I can make that decision when I arrive based on the light available that day.
Parents, siblings and pets are part of the session
In-home newborn sessions include your immediate family, so there is no need to choose between photographs of baby and photographs of everyone together. I photograph the combinations that matter most: the full family, each parent with baby, siblings together and baby on their own.
Siblings often do especially well at home because they can move in and out of the session naturally. Rather than asking a toddler to cooperate for two or three hours, we photograph them when they are ready and let them take a break when they are finished.
Pets can also be included when it is safe and comfortable for everyone. Sometimes that means a carefully directed family photograph; other times it is simply your dog lying nearby while you cuddle your newest family member.
What should you wear for in-home newborn photos?
You do not need to dress formally. Soft, simple clothing generally works best for lifestyle newborn photographs because it keeps the attention on your family and photographs naturally inside the home.
- Choose neutral, muted or softly coordinated colors
- Mix subtle textures rather than matching everyone exactly
- Avoid large logos and neon colors
- Choose clothing you can comfortably sit, cuddle and move in
- Have baby's simple outfit or swaddle ready, but don't stress about multiple looks
What if your house is dark or small?
You do not need a huge home or floor-to-ceiling windows. I photograph families in houses, townhomes and apartments, and I bring professional lighting when needed to maintain a clean, consistent look.
Often one good window or one bright room is enough. The purpose of an in-home session is not to show off your house—it is to preserve what your family looked and felt like during this short season.

In-Home Service Area
In-home newborn photography throughout Northern Utah
I am based in Ogden and travel to families throughout Northern Utah and along the Wasatch Front. In-home sessions are available throughout Weber County, Davis County, Salt Lake City, Box Elder County and Utah County, including many communities in between.
When should you book an in-home newborn session?
I recommend reaching out while you are still pregnant whenever possible. Your due date gives us a starting point, and the actual session date can be adjusted once baby arrives.
If your baby is already here, it is still worth reaching out. Newborn sessions do not suddenly stop being beautiful after a specific number of days. Older newborns may simply give us more awake expressions and slightly different posing than a very sleepy one-week-old.
Want more help preparing?
I put together a complete newborn photography preparation guide covering feeding, what to bring, what to wear, siblings, studio sessions and what happens if your baby doesn't sleep.
Is an in-home or studio newborn session better for you?
Choose an in-home newborn session if you want your home, nursery, pets and everyday family connection to be part of the photographs. Choose a studio newborn session if you prefer more posed newborn portraits, curated setups and a larger variety of wraps and props.
Neither option is better—they simply tell your baby's story differently. You can compare all of my Utah newborn photography options here .
