A Senior Session That Felt Like Her

Brielle wanted her Salt Flats senior photos to show off more than “just portraits.” She’s in color guard, so we built the session around the things that actually matter to her — clean editorial-style images, then movement + feature moments with her guard equipment once the light got softer.

Late fall was perfect: it wasn’t too cold at the start, the flats were still dry, and we had just enough sunset glow to make the whole gallery feel warm and timeless.

When is the best time of day for Salt Flats photos?
The best light is typically 1–2 hours before sunset for warm glow and softer shadows. Sunrise is also beautiful and can be quieter. Midday can work for a bright, editorial look, but it’s harsher and hotter.
What are conditions like at the Bonneville Salt Flats?
Conditions vary by season. Sometimes it’s dry and crisp, and other times there may be standing water (which can look incredible for reflections). Wind is common, and the ground can be soft after storms. I’ll help you plan based on the forecast and recent conditions.
Where do we meet?
I typically recommend meeting at the westbound rest stop off I-80 (near the Salt Flats), then we drive in together and choose the best spot based on conditions and light.
How long is the drive?
From the Salt Lake City area, it’s about 1.5–2 hours each way depending on traffic and your starting point. Out-of-state families often plan a full afternoon/evening around the session (and it’s worth it).
What should we wear?
Think clean, simple, and elevated: neutrals, denim, black/white, soft earth tones, or a bold statement outfit. Avoid neon and big logos. I’ll help coordinate outfits so everything photographs timelessly.
What if weather is a problem?
This is exactly why I recommend out-of-state clients schedule two possible days. I block off two days as a built-in backup, then we choose the better option based on conditions. If it’s unsafe (storms, high winds, flooding), we pivot to the backup date or a nearby alternative location.
Do you use a drone?
When conditions allow and it’s safe/legal to fly, yes — drone shots can add an incredible sense of scale. Wind and weather determine whether drone images are possible on your date.
