All the details.
Your Bonneville Salt Flats senior photo prep guide—what to wear, where to meet, and how to make a fun evening out of it.
I’m looking forward to your photos! Save this page for the drive, send me your outfit ideas, and leave the posing to me.
Use the date and start time in your booking confirmation. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early.

01 / The drive
Here’s where we’ll meet.
Salt Flats Rest Area Westbound
This is the westbound I-80 rest area shown in my Salt Flats blog. Please use this exact pin instead of searching only “Bonneville Salt Flats,” which can send you to a different entrance.
From Salt Lake City, travel west on I-80 toward Wendover and follow navigation into the rest-area lot. Park on the pavement and meet me before heading onto the salt.
Not the eastbound rest area or the Speedway entrance off Exit 4. If you’re coming from Wendover, follow the map’s legal highway route to the westbound stop. Never cross the median or use maintenance turnarounds.
If the map doesn’t load, use the GPS button. Save directions before leaving; cell service can be inconsistent.
02 / Make it yours
Wear what feels like you.
A little variety.
Choose a casual look, a dressier option, and something that shows your personality. Send me photos if you want help narrowing them down; we’ll fit changes into your booked session.
Bold colors and soft tones both look great here. Try everything on, move around, steam wrinkles, and pack outfits on hangers with the right shoes and undergarments.
Keep it comfortable.
Style hair and makeup the way you like them. Bring a brush, hair ties, lip balm and touch-up items. Check nails, clean glasses, and remove hair ties from wrists.
Bring walking shoes and a warm layer. Salt gets on everything, so leave delicate items that can’t handle salt or a little dirt at home.
Bring your story.
Cap and gown, a letterman jacket, an instrument, sports gear or something creative—bring what matters to you. Tell me about larger props in advance.
A parent or friend can come for support. Empty phones and keys from pockets before photos. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands—I’ll help!
Plan to change in your vehicle if needed; don’t count on a private changing room. Bring inspiration photos and tell me if you’d like a mix of classic portraits and creative movement.
03 / A little flexibility
What if it’s flooded?
Water changes the plan.
The flats can be dry or covered in water, especially in cooler months or after rain. Reflections can be beautiful, but we’ll check conditions and access before deciding what’s possible.
If conditions look questionable, contact me before leaving. Wait for our confirmed plan rather than finding another entrance yourself. Cloud cover alone can still give us beautiful photos.
If shallow-water photos are safe and access is open, we can discuss a limited walking session. Wait for me before stepping onto the salt. Reflection photos are never guaranteed.
Check BLM access information ↗If we’re photographing in shallow water
- Waterproof boots or shoes that can get salty and wet
- Towel, dry socks, clean shoes and a change of clothes
- Plastic bin for extra outfits and belongings
- A bag for wet or salty items on the drive home
Never drive onto wet or flooded salt. Stay on paved parking areas, follow posted closures, and leave barriers in place.
If water is too deep or cold, footing is unsafe, or there’s lightning, strong wind or a closure, we’ll discuss another location or rescheduling before you make the drive.
04 / Before you head out
The quick packing check.
Tap through this list while you pack. Keep water and a layer handy—the light is bright, the wind can pick up, and it cools down after sunset.
Checklist marks are for this visit only. Take a screenshot if you’d like to save them.
05 / Make an evening of it
Dinner, a full tank, or a night away.
Wendover is farther west along I-80. Change out of salty clothes, grab something to eat, and get comfortable before the drive home.
